As a child, British designer Sir Paul Smith dreamed to be a professional cyclist, but after a car crash he had to quit his ambitions. During the six-months hospital stay, he made new friends who introduced him to the world of art and fashion. After a period spent working as a menswear buyer and attending tailoring classes, in 1970 he opened a little shop in his hometown Nottingham. In 1976 he showed his first menswear collection, followed twenty years later by the women’ line. Besides his signature multicolored stripe pattern, Paul Smith is famed for combining tailored designs with a touch of eccentricity. Very British.
